The Unfinished Odyssey: Ikaruga’s Legacy and the Halted Journey of Ubusuna

The spirit of Ikaruga’s follow-up has reached its end. In truth, Ikaruga was never the final Dreamcast product, even though it stood as one of the last major endeavors. The team behind it engineered a shoot 'em up experience where the impact of being hit carried as much weight as taking your own initiative.

This masterpiece still finds its way onto various lists celebrating the greatest games ever made, although its creators rarely opt to produce official follow-ups. In keeping with other cherished classics, such as:

  • Mischief Makers
  • Silhouette Mirage
  • Radiant Silvergun
  • Sin and Punishment

Ikaruga similarly has not received a new installment.

Back in 2014, reports surfaced that a successor in spirit was being developed by an independent team led by the original visionary behind Ikaruga. This project, intended to be named Ubusuna, remained shrouded in uncertainty regarding how closely it would mirror its inspiration. Recently, an official update on a social platform confirmed that progress on the project has been halted.

An executive at the developing company explained that severe challenges resulted in the lead creative’s decision to step away—a decision mutually agreed upon. Although attempts were made to find a way forward after his departure, it soon became evident that achieving a complete version of Ubusuna without his essential contribution was not feasible.

The studio has expressed regret to its supporters by removing all related video content, yet a glimmer of hope persists. The original creative mind has conveyed his desire to someday see the project finished, even if that means pursuing it along a different path from the current one.

The final message urges fans not to engage in excessive speculation or to direct unwarranted negativity toward those involved. Despite the high level of anticipation surrounding the project, it is important to remember that real people on the team are also affected by harsh criticism.
