Google has made a significant move in expanding its AI Overviews feature, which is now available in over 100 countries, marking a major step forward in its global reach. This feature provides users with a concise summary of their search queries through artificial intelligence. Initially offered in just a few regions, Google is now broadening its user base through this latest update. This expansion marks the most extensive rollout since the feature's inception. Additionally, a recent report indicated that certain users started noticing advertisements appearing at the bottom of the AI Overviews interface.
In a recent announcement on the company's blog, the official launch of the AI Overviews expansion was revealed. Initially rolled out to beta testers under the name Search Generative Experience (SGE), this feature first became available to the general public in May 2023. Upon its launch, Google rebranded it with a new name to enhance its identity.
Commencing this week, Google has made AI Overviews accessible in a range of additional languages beyond English, now including Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. This change allows the feature to function effectively even when inquiries are posed in languages other than English.
With this expansion, Google anticipates that AI Overviews will eventually serve over one billion users worldwide. This move appears to be part of a strategy to monetize the feature, as there have been reports of ads being integrated into the AI Overviews interface. Users can expect these advertisements to be placed in designated areas with clear labels that differentiate between organic search results and sponsored content. While ads have mainly been seen on desktop browsers, the company is now extending ad placements to mobile devices in the US, aiming to help users discover products and brands that align with their searches.
Recently, Google has enhanced the transparency of AI Overviews. The feature now includes a visible link icon that directs users to the original source of the information presented. This initiative is aimed at increasing traffic to the source websites, ensuring that they benefit from the content displayed within the AI Overviews.
